Australia 190 Points 2026: How Qualifications and Australian Study Add Points

How a degree, Australian study, specialist education and a Professional Year become subclass 190 points — and what each of those claims demands as proof.

Qualifications do not carry Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) points on their own. They carry points only through the specific claims you make in your SkillSelect expression of interest — educational qualifications, satisfying the Australian study requirement, specialist education, a Professional Year in Australia, study in regional Australia, partner skills, and accredited community language — and each of those claims is priced by the Department’s official points calculator and then has to be proved with documents. According to the Australian Department of Home Affairs’ official Skilled Nominated visa (Subclass 190) page, checked against the July 2026 official page, the visa is points-tested: SkillSelect estimates your score from the claims in your EOI, a result below 65 points means you will not be invited, and lodging the application requires evidence supporting every claim you made. The rules below describe how the published framework works in general terms rather than advice on an individual case, so your own invitation and the Department’s current published requirements remain the binding reference for any decision you make.

What has to be true before any qualification gets counted?

A qualification reaches the points test through your nominated occupation, not around it. Your occupation has to appear on the relevant skilled occupation list for the 190 visa, and you must declare at the time of invitation that you hold a suitable skills assessment for that occupation.

Two details on that page change planning more than people expect:

  • Validity window. Your skills assessment must have been obtained in the three years before the date of your invitation. If it was issued for a shorter period, that period must not have passed.
  • Timing relief after invitation. Following the decision in Thapa v Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs [2021] FCCA 686, delegates will accept a suitable skills assessment obtained within the 60-day invitation period, even though the Minister reserves the right to argue in court that Thapa was wrongly decided.

If your skills were assessed on the basis of a qualification you obtained in Australia while you held a student visa, that qualification must come from studying a course registered on CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students). Registration status therefore sits underneath the entire education side of your points claim, not just underneath the student visa you held at the time.

Which education and study claims actually sit inside the points test?

The Department’s Step 2 “Skills assessment documents” list names the evidentiary areas that can follow from how and where you studied. The useful insight is that several of them are separate claims rather than one single “education” box:

Claim the Department listsWhat it is anchored toCommon planning trap
Educational qualificationsThe qualification itself, as assessedAssuming the highest qualification automatically replaces lower ones in the score
Satisfying the Australian study requirementStudy undertaken in AustraliaTreating it as the same claim as holding an Australian degree
Specialist educationA particular field of studyCounting it without checking what the points table requires of the field
Professional Year in AustraliaCompletion of a Professional Year programmeClaiming it on the strength of enrolment or partial completion
Study in regional AustraliaWhere the study was undertakenMissing it because the campus location was not checked against the criteria

Partner skillsYour partner’s qualifications and assessmentClaiming partner skills without the partner’s own supporting documents

The number of points attached to each row is not printed on the visa page itself. The official points calculator (also called the points table) is the tool the Department points you to for both the scoring and the matching documents, and it is where a given qualification level translates into an actual figure. Checking your own claims against that calculator — rather than against recollection or forum summaries — is what keeps an EOI honest.

Do the degree and the Australian study requirement double up?

They are listed separately, so plan for them separately. One claim rests on the qualification you hold; the other rests on having studied in Australia, and the two can describe overlapping years from very different angles. Where the official page is explicit is on the assessment side: an Australian qualification used as the basis of your skills assessment while you were on a student visa has to come from a CRICOS-registered course. Beyond that, the eligibility criteria for the Australian study requirement are set out in the points table, so it is the right place to test whether your particular course load satisfies it.

Assume an applicant completed a two-year Australian master’s degree at a CRICOS-registered course and now works in the nominated occupation. That single period of study may feed more than one line of their EOI — the qualification claim, the Australian study claim, and possibly study in regional Australia depending on campus location — but each line is scored and evidenced on its own terms, and none of them relieves the applicant of the separate skills assessment, English, and nomination requirements.

How much evidence does a qualifications claim really need?

Enough to survive an independent recount. After you apply, you must show that you meet the points score stated on your invitation, which includes proving any claim you made in your EOI, alongside the other eligibility criteria. The Step 2 document list groups this by claim rather than by form number, so expect at least evidence of your skills assessment, English language skills, Australian and overseas skilled employment, educational qualifications, satisfying the Australian study requirement, specialist education, accredited community language, study in regional Australia, partner skills, and a Professional Year in Australia, depending on what you claimed.

Two procedural realities make weak documentation expensive rather than merely inconvenient. Once you apply, you must meet the points score on your invitation; when you lodge, you must provide evidence supporting your claims. And the Department may make a decision on your application without requesting further documents, so evidence you meant to add later may never be solicited.

Why can the score on your invitation be higher than 65?

Because 65 is the floor for being in the pool conversation, not the finish line. The official language is precise: below 65 you are not invited, and once you are invited the invitation states the number of points you must score when the application is assessed for grant — a figure that may be higher than 65, depending on what you claimed in the EOI.

For study-related claims this cuts both ways. Every additional claim you make to climb above the floor — regional study, specialist education, a Professional Year, partner skills — becomes a commitment you have to prove. Removing an unprovable claim from the EOI is often safer than leaving it in and hoping the rest of the score absorbs the shortfall, because the invitation records what you said, not what you can support.

What timing rules shape the whole plan?

The education side of a 190 case is unusually time-sensitive, so sequence matters:

  • Age. You must be under 45 when invited. Turning 45 after the invitation is fine; turning 45 after you submit the EOI but before an invitation means you will not be invited, and a visa application will not be processed if you are 45 at the time of invitation.
  • English. At least competent English is required at the time of invitation, independent of how strong your qualification is.
  • Skills assessment currency. Counted from the date of invitation, not from the date you lodge.
  • After invitation. You have 60 calendar days to apply, and that period cannot be extended. Ignore two invitations and your EOI is removed from SkillSelect. An invitation can arrive up to two years after you submitted the EOI, and receiving one does not mean the visa will be granted.
  • Nomination. Only nomination by a state or territory government agency leads to an invitation, each agency applies its own criteria, and if the nominating agency withdraws nomination after you apply, your application becomes invalid.

Suppose an applicant’s assessment has four months of validity left when the EOI goes in and the invitation arrives eighteen months later. Nothing about their degree has changed, but the claim may no longer be provable in its original form — which is why the Thapa allowance for an assessment obtained during the 60-day invitation period matters as a fallback rather than as a plan.

Frequently asked questions

Does a higher degree automatically mean more 190 points?

No. The qualification is scored through the categories in the official points calculator, and the visa page itself does not publish per-qualification values. Compare your specific qualification against the points table before assuming that a master’s outranks a bachelor’s in your particular combination of claims.

Can I be credited for both my educational qualifications and the Australian study requirement?

They are listed as separate items in the Department’s evidence list, so they are scored and evidenced independently. Whether your particular course of study satisfies the Australian study requirement is determined against the criteria set out in the points table.

Does the Australian qualification behind my skills assessment have to be CRICOS-registered?

Yes, where your skills were assessed on the basis of a qualification you obtained in Australia while holding a student visa. The official page requires the qualification to come from studying a course registered on CRICOS.

How recent does my skills assessment need to be at invitation?

It must have been obtained in the three years before your invitation date, or within its own shorter validity period if one was stated. Following Thapa, an assessment obtained during the 60-day invitation period will also be accepted.

My invitation shows a higher score than the 65 I estimated — which one counts?

The one on your invitation. That is the score you must meet when the application is assessed for grant, which means proving the claims that produced it. A score below 65 in SkillSelect simply means no invitation is issued.

I cannot find documents for a claim I made about my studies. What happens?

The Department may decide your application without requesting more documents, so unproven claims tend to fail rather than prompt a reminder. Where evidence is genuinely unavailable, correcting the claim before relying on it is safer than carrying an unsupported line into your application.

Is there a charge for submitting the EOI itself?

No. The EOI is not a visa application, and there is no fee for submitting it. The Department states it will not refund the application charge if it later refuses the application.
